New York, April 22 (EFE) - The director of Vogue, Anna Wintour, received recognition from the editors of American magazines to enter the exalted circle of professionals that make up the Editors’ Hall of Fame.

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME), creator of the prestigious club, rewarded the career of Wintour, one of the most respected gurus of the world of fashion and indispensable part of major fashion events in the Big Apple.

Wintour, whose distinctive hairstyle and penchant for covering his eyes with dark glasses are already iconic among fashionistas, was the star of a gala on Thursday 22 April at the renowned Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan, where she was honored by her peers in the competitive editorial profession.

"Wintour has defined the style of a generation of readers of magazines and has personified the essential qualities of editorial leadership," Sid Holt, the director of ASME, said in announcing the award, also stressing "the high standards of good taste" demonstrated by the British editor throughout her career.

The director of Vogue began her career in London in 1970, joining Harper's Bazaar in New York in 1976, from where she jumped to New York magazine and later became creative director of the prestigious fashion magazine Vogue that she still directs.

Respected and feared equally by fashion designers, Wintour inspired the main character in the blockbuster novel "The Devil Wears Prada" and was later played by actress Meryl Streep in the film of the same name. The film reflects her strong character, love of work and a somewhat eccentric personality.

Wintour also appeared in "The September Issue", a documentary by RJ Cutler that premiered in 2009 that explores the mysteries of the world of glamor, fashion and luxury through the history of Vogue.

ASME was founded in 1963 and is the largest association of journalists in U.S. magazines. The Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame was created in 1995 to recognize professional achievements of the directors of such publications.

Since then, the organization has inducted names very familiar to the American public like Martha Stewart and the prestigious editor Tina Brown.
