Amazon UK sees double-digit growth
Amazon’s UK unit delivered a 23% increase in revenues to £13.4 billion in 2019, outperforming the national trend and other key Amazon markets including Germany and Japan.
In US dollar terms, sales in the UK grew 20.7% to $17.53 billion, while the e-tailer’s global sales jumped 20% to $280.5 billion (£214.9 billion).
The results were achieved despite a difficult economic climate, with the UK business outperforming sales in other international markets including Germany, which grew by 11.8% and Japan, up 15.7% year-on-year.
The strength of the e-commerce giant’s UK unit was further demonstrated in comparison with its international business, which increased revenues by 13% in total, reported Retail Week.
A results breakdown showed that Amazon’s online stores accounted for 50.4% of total revenues in 2019, with third-party services reporting a 19.2% uplift. Subscription services continue to be a smaller part of the company’s business, however the number of Prime subscribers is rising fast, hitting the 150 million mark by the end of the year.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) saw revenues jump 37% during the year, and the North America segment delivered a 21% increase.
