Amazon's EU fashion boss to take over as head of UK unit

Published
Sep 8, 2020

The growing importance of fashion as a key category for Amazon was made even clearer this week as one of its major fashion executives was unveiled as its next UK chief.

The company said that John Boumphrey, the head of its European fashion business and a nine-year veteran of the group, will run its UK operations when current head Doug Gurr leaves the firm and moves to a new and very different job in charge of the natural History Museum.

The 45 year-old has previous experience at the UK unit having run its media, home and leisure operations in Britain when he first joined the group. He was in that role for four years and also spent three years with the company in Seattle.

He became vice-president of Amazon Fashion Europe two years ago and was in charge when it launched its Destination Denim deep dive into the branded jeans market.

Prior to Amazon, his experience saw him working at interiors retailer Homebase and at Bain & Company.

His arrival at the helm of the UK ops will come as the company adds a further 7,000 jobs in Britain in addition to the 3,000 it has added this year already.
