Amazon plans new fulfilment centre in East Midlands

Published
Apr 26, 2019

It seems 17 fulfilment centres are not enough for Amazon UK as the giant e-tailer’s growth continues to outpace its online rivals. The company has now announced plans to open a new centre in Kegworth, East Midlands that will further increase its product selection and support more third-party sellers using its Fulfilment by Amazon service.

Crucially, the new site will help the e-commerce platform meet growing demand. A new research from Mintel has found that almost 90% of UK shoppers use Amazon to stock up on everything from books, clothing, tech devices and even groceries, and 40% have access to its Prime subscription service, which offers faster deliveries.

The new fulfilment centre will create 500 permanent roles, with capacity to expand to over 1,000 permanent positions in the future. This will add to the over 27,500 jobs Amazon has generated in the UK since 2010.

“We are thrilled to begin recruitment for 500 new permanent roles in Kegworth, with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one,” said Stefano Perego, Amazon vice president of UK Customer Fulfilment.

“We are delighted to expand our operations in the East Midlands. With capacity to expand our workforce to over 1,000 permanent positions in the future, this new team will play a crucial role in delivering a first rate level of service for our customers.”

“I was very pleased to learn that Amazon had chosen the East Midlands Gateway area for their new fulfilment centre,” added Andrew Bridgen MP for North West Leicestershire. “The decision demonstrates the ever increasing strength of our thriving local economy and the confidence that business has in our area.”

Kegworth will be the fifth Amazon fulfilment centre in the Midlands, and joins facilities in Coalville, Daventry, Rugeley, and Rugby, which are due to open later this year.
