This week, Amazon Fashion is launching StyleSnap, an image recognition tool, in the UK and Germany.

The online retailer said the built-in app feature helps consumers shop by simply uploading a photo, which is then matched with similar products available to purchase on Amazon Fashion.

John Boumphrey, vice president of Amazon Fashion Europe said: “We are dedicated to continuously creating new experiences for customers to discover the products they want and love. StyleSnap enables customers to shop visually for products that have inspired them. We are excited to see what customers think.”

StyleSnap uses images uploaded by users to generate product recommendations, and it considers a variety of factors such as brand, price range, and customer reviews. The tool will initially work on dresses, tops, bottoms, shoes and bags, with a view to expand its capabilities across the women’s and men’s offering in the future.

Visual search is not new, but it’s a feature that is increasingly going mainstream in the fashion world as it provides an easier way for consumers to find what they are looking for. According to MarketWatch, 62% of millennials and Gen-Z want visual search more than any other new technology, and over 600 million visual searches take place on Pinterest each month.

Asos, Boohoo, Ebay, Farfetch, Forever 21 and Marks & Spencer are some of the fashion brands testing the potential of visual search.
