All M&Co stores will close

Published
Feb 6, 2023

All 170 M&Co stores are to close following the brand’s sale to AK Retail. The sale was announced last week and didn’t include the store estate so news that the shops would close wasn’t unexpected.

M&Co

It will mean the loss of almost 2,000 jobs when the shops finally shut this spring.

The Scotland-based chain — which operates across the UK — went into administration for the second time late last year wand has been running closing-down sales with the stores scheduled to shut at Easter.

In a post on Facebook, it announced that “we haven't received the news we would have hoped for during our administration period, and would like to share this news with you. As we haven't received any funded, deliverable offers that would result in the transfer of the company's stores or staff to a potential buyer, this means that all of our stores will close”.

The business began as Mackays in 1834 and was owned by the McGeoch family that turned it into a clothing retailer in the 1950s. Its name was changed to M&Co in 2005.

It first went into administration in 2020, at which time it closed 47 of its stores.
