In its biggest move in retail since the opening on the avenue Montaigne in 2013, Maison Alaïa on Tuesday finally opened its London flagship store at 139 New Bond Street.

Maison Alaïa

The store, announced only a few months before the founder’s death, is its first standalone outside of Paris (where it has two flagships) and marks a key milestone for the post-Azzedine Alaïa development of the Richemont-controlled label.

The label currently sells in the UK not far from Bond Street with a concession inside Selfridges, as well as one across town in Harrods, Knightsbridge. Globally, it’s also available in Galeries Lafayette, Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, Tsum, Lane Crawford, Joyce and 10 Corso Como

The new three-level 6,000 sq ft flagship is in the heart of luxury country with Fendi as its neighbour and will offer the label’s complete line-up of clothing, footwear and accessories. Importantly too, the couture service available in France will also be offered at the location.

The property was previously home to jeweller and antiques dealer SJ Phillips but will now focus on fashion, although the décor also features bespoke pieces from a number of artists with Alaïa himself having overseen the early stages of the look and feel.

It includes glass benches by Naoto Fukasawa, Shiro Kuramata bookshelves, carpet by Gio Ponti and giant lights by Marc Newson.
