Adidas Originals launches retro Man U collection

Mixing nostalgia and modernity, the latest episode in Manchester United X Adidas Originals long-running collection which “revisits popular pieces of adidas’ archive and recodes them into football culture”. 

The latest jersey in the collection is a reissue of the kit synonymous with club’s rise in fortunes of the late 1980s and early 90s. The collection reimagines pieces worn by fans “as they followed the club to away games across England during this iconic era”.

Invoking a “feeling of nostalgia”, it gives a nod to the “design DNA of this time", the nine-piece collection offers a fresh take on celebrated legacy pieces, alongside a number of commemorative apparel drops including a hoodie, T-shirts, and a bench jacket.

The hero of the collection is that jersey, which is inspired by the same legendary kit worn at that time. This includes an engineered ‘MUFC’ jacquard material and crafted ribbed collar with red and black detailing on the edges. Mirroring the original, the adidas Trefoil, the club’s crest and wider sponsor iconography of the time, are all raised onto the core fabric of the jersey.

An animated version of Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez sporting the new jersey is due to appear on this month’s ‘United We Stand’ fanzine cover.

Replica shirts and accompanying collections are a hugely important part of any major sponsorship deal between clubs and kit suppliers and is not just a key revenue stream but takes on added importance linking its worldwide fans to the club.
