080 Barcelona Fashion opens amid scheduling conflicts

080 Barcelona Fashion is opening this Monday, following the men’s fashion weeks in London, Milan, Paris and Haute Couture Fashion Week, with Copenhagen coming soon after (from January 30 to February 2) and its Madrid counterpart still taking place.

It comes after the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid decided to move its dates earlier this season as part of an internationalisation strategy to attract more buyers and foreign press. The move has created a scheduling conflict in Europe, where the catwalk calendar is primarily dictated by major fashion capitals.

As a result, the organisers of the 080, led by director Miquel Rodriguez, decided to adjust its dates to reduce the number of conflicts on the first day, when designer Ze Garcia will stage a catwalk show featuring 15 social media influencers, who have several million followers in total. By taking advantage of social media stars’ Instagram power, with influencers including Dulceida, Maria Pombo and Laura Escanes, 080 Barcelona Fashion is hoping the marketing campaign will help it counteract Madrid Fashion Week.

Running until Friday 2 February, 32 brands and designers will show their collections at the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, where the previous edition of the fashion week was also held. And Autumn Winter 2018/2019 collections will be presented alongside ready-to-buy Spring Summer 2018 ranges from designers including Escorpion and Custo Barcelona, as more fashion brands adapt their releases in a bid to remain relevant in the ever changing consumer landscape.

Also present will be Catalonian brands such as Naulover, Lola Casademunt, Wom & Now, and Torras, which won the MODACC-080 award for exporting firms; as well as established names including Miriam Ponsa, Txell Miras, Pablo Erroz, Oscarleon, Antonio Miro, Krizia Robustella, Lebor Gabala, Pilardelcampo, Loa by Lidia Aguilera and Brain & Beast. Emerging designers Mietis, Elena Estaun, amt., Jnorig and Sweet Matitos will be also showcasing their latest collections, while children’s fashion will be represented by Boboli and Little Creative Factory. Additionally, Punto Blanco and ES collection will showcase lingerie collections.

After having Margherita Missoni as a guest of honour at Barcelona fashion week’s summer edition, this season’s international focus will be presented by actress Rossy de Palma and fashion editor Lisa Lovatt-Smith, who will lead a seminar on the life and career of Azzedine Alaïa, who passed away in November. An exhibition of dresses and designs by the late designer will also pay tribute to Alaïa.

In addition to catwalk shows, the event will hold the fifth edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion Week Showroom with a score of participating Catalonian brands and international buyers from Japan, China, Germany, the UK and Sweden, among others. Meanwhile, digital trends will be analysed in a panel discussion, and textile companies and entrepreneurs will be invited to participate in Conéctate by Futurmod, which takes place on 2 February and close the Catalonian fashion week.
