She was selected among a pool of 3,000 design graduates from the UK’s leading art and design courses at a special awards preview evening at the Business Design Centre in London on Wednesday 6 July.

Tereza Astilean was recognised for her work Verpackt, a jacket that can be transformed into a sleeping bag, made from fabric developed from the offcuts of carpets.

Tereza said: “The project is exploring ways in which industrial offcuts of carpet can be re-used. It brings a new methodology to the design of processes, products and services by looking at raw materials both in terms of their intrinsic value and how, at the end of that product’s useful life, they can be taken apart and recycled into products that have value and sophistication beyond their original use.”

Pentland Brands Creative Director, Gareth Davies, commented on the creation: “A fantastic researched product that has been made from industrial carpet waste that is up-cycled to create a new, innovative product.”

New Designers is the UK’s exhibition for emerging design, and covers a range of creative disciplines including Textiles & Fashion, Costume Design, Jewellery & Precious Metalwork, Graphic Design,Furniture and Motion & Digital Arts, to name a few. Sponsors include Pentland, Not on the High Street and Absolut.

Tereza Astilean will be offered a two month, paid programme of study within the Design Talent Team at Pentland Brands.
