High street visits dip as return-to-work numbers slow on rising Covid cases - Springboard

Published
Oct 25, 2021

Footfall across UK retail destinations fell a collective 1.5% week-on-week in the latest seven days (17-23 October), dragged down by a hefty 3.6% high streets drop, according to Springboard.

High street visits declined in all 10 UK geographies, which ranged from -1.3% in Greater London to -6.9% in the North & Yorkshire.

But the overall figure could have been worse had footfall at retail parks and shopping centres not risen 0.9% and 0.4% respectively.

And although footfall across Central London wasn’t as bad, dipping just 1.2%, Springboard’s ‘Back to the Office’ benchmark, which tracks those areas in Central London that are dominated by offices rather than retail, declined by 4.2%.

Factoring in a drop in footfall of 5.1% in regional cities outside of the capital “suggests that the drift back to the office has slowed, potentially due to the knowledge of the rising number of Covid-19 cases being reported”, the Monday report suggested.

Compared to 2020, the current UK footfall is 27.9% higher, but the dip in activity last week meant that this narrowed slightly from +28.1% from the week before, and the gap from 2019 widened slightly to -15.3% from -14%.

But Diane Wehrle, Insights Director at Springboard, noted that the latest footfall decline across UK retail destinations last week, “was not an unexpected result given that many schools have their half term holiday this week and a dip in activity in the week before the school break is a long-term trend as shopping trips are deferred.”
