Half-naked PETA activists wearing a ‘dead ostrich’ dress and a handbag-shaped sign protested against Hermès use of ostrich leather at the brand’s flagship store on London’s New Bond Street on Thursday.

The demonstration came on the back of the organisation’s latest exposé, which reveals gruesome details within the ostrich-slaughter industry. According to PETA, the investigation also involved a look into the exclusive supplier of ostrich skins for Hermès bags and is now trying to put pressure on this luxury house to remove ostrich and other exotic skins from its collections.

“Anyone who buys a bumpy Birkin bag or pockmarked Prada purse is responsible for the shocking, slaughtering, plucking and skinning of a smart, sensitive and curious young ostrich,” says PETA Associate Director Elisa Allen. “With so many high-end and stylish cruelty-free accessories available, PETA is calling on shoppers to bag the animal skins and shop vegan.”

According to the activist movement, South Africa is the largest ostrich killing capital in the world, where these birds are smacked, killed, plucked and skinned for high-end luxury handbags.
