Newly-completed Leeds mall Victoria Gate has been named as the Best Shopping Centre in the world at the Mipin Awards in Cannes this week.

Victoria Gate - Hammerson

The £165 million shopping centre, developed by Hammerson plc, opened its doors to the public in October last year. The scheme is anchored by a John Lewis flagship store, which is the first in Leeds and the largest outside of London, and houses a strong line-up of aspirational brands, including Russell & Bromley, GANT, Hackett, Tommy Hilfiger, Joules, Aspinal of London and Anthropologie.

The shopping arcade was recognised for offering a unique shopper experience through new technologies, services, customer loyalty programmes and architectural features.

Victoria Gate was designed by architects Acme, who gave its façade a striking look inspired by the surrounding architecture of Leeds’ historic buildings. The scheme incorporates services such as click & collect, gift wrapping, currency exchange and a luxury concierge service.

"We are delighted that the success of Victoria Gate has been recognised with such a prestigious award. The striking architecture and premium brand mix makes this scheme truly unique, and we are very proud to have set new standards for retail across Europe," commented Robin Dobson, Director of Retail Development at Hammerson.

Other finalists for the Best Shopping Centre award included Lee Tung Avenue in Hong Kong, Morinomiya Q’s Mall Base in Osaka Japan and Parc Central in Guangzhou China.
