Cult NYC-based skate brand Supreme has announced the launch of a collection featuring the photographs of iconic and controversial documenter of New York’s subcultures Nan Goldin, set to debut this spring.

The collection consists of a coach jacket, a hooded sweatshirt, three t-shirts and three skateboards, each featuring one of three of the photographer’s works: Misty and Jimmy Paulette in a taxi, NYC (1991); Kim in Rhinestones, Paris (1991); Nan as a dominatrix, Cambridge MA (1978).

Goldin is perhaps best known for her explorations of gender and human sexuality, having gained notoriety for the frank depictions of drug use and LGBT subcultures in the photographic slideshows she created from the late 1970s onward. Of these, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is, without doubt, the most enduringly famous, and traces a deeply personal narrative spanning from Boston to New York, Berlin and beyond, and encompassing love and loss, joy and violence, at the height of the AIDS epidemic.

She currently splits her time between New York and Berlin, creating works which address the opioid crisis.

Supreme’s photography-focused Nan Goldin collection makes for an interesting follow-up to the brand’s most recent music-themed collaboration, which featured artwork from hip-hop group Public Enemy’s ground-breaking Fear of a Black Planet, a politically potent album released in 1990, which criticizes white supremacy and encourages black empowerment. While continuing the theme of representing marginalized communities, the new collection foregrounds questions of sexual and gender diversity rarely addressed by skate culture.

The Supreme x Nan Goldin collection will be available online and in the brand’s stores in New York, Brooklyn, LA, London and Paris on March 29, 2018. The collaboration will be released in Japan on March 31.
