As the rise of the male grooming market indicates, more men are now paying attention to their appearance, but increasingly demanding lives and environmental aggressors are taking their toll on men’s skin, which in turn is having a major impact on their self-confidence, found a new report from Braun.

A research undertaken amongst more than 7,000 men aged between 18-34 years old across the UK, France, Russia, Japan, Italy, German and China has found that 34% of men consider their skin to be sensitive.

This is becoming a top concern among men and is potentially impacting their behaviour, with the survey finding that dry, sensitive or slightly red skin would make 52% of men feel self- conscious during a date, heading for a job interview (50%) and on a night out with friends (32%). Additionally, 21% of those surveyed said skin issues would make them feel self-conscious if they were playing sport.

The majority of men (57%) blame the weather when it comes to their skin, and over 55% believe getting sweaty has an effect on how their skin feels. Surprisingly, 47% believe greasy food has an impact - despite research showing the contrary. Air conditioning and pollution are also named as factors.

Men’s top skin concerns are breakouts, dryness and redness, says Braun, and only 15% identifies wrinkles as their number one worry.

Meanwhile 48% of men reach for the moisturiser when their skin is feeling dry and irritated, while 35% drink more water.

The research helped Braun develop a new foil shaver for men with sensitive skin. Titled Braun Series 3 ProSkin, the shaver comes with the advanced MicroComb technology, which reduces skin irritation by cutting short and long hairs simultaneously.
