River Island to launch third-party brands online

This spring will see River Island add a host of influential menswear brands to its online men’s offering to complement its in-house range.

The move will help River Island further capitalise on the menswear momentum, as the category is the fastest growing at the company.

The selection of brands has been handpicked by the British retailer and includes directional denim brands such as Levi’s, Lee and Wrangler.

Bestseller-owned brands Jack & Jones, and Only & Sons are also part of the initial launch, as well as Hype, one of the UK’s most recognisable menswear brands, renowned for its striking graphic prints and statement streetwear. Further brands are expected to launch throughout the year.

“River Island is synonymous with trend-led, high-quality product. We are always looking to improve our consumer shopping experience and so it was a no brainer to supplement our in-house designed ranges with a hand-picked selection of brands,” said Nick Tahir, head of menswear buying at River Island, about the launch of third-party brands.

“Research has shown that the brand market is growing rapidly for men and the RI guy will happily wear River Island product with a branded piece. This valuable insight allows us to increase our offering and enforce our position as a destination for menswear fashion.”

River Island is not the only affordable fashion brand looking at menswear to drive growth. Missguided founder Nitin Passi launched a new menswear brand Mennace last year, and Quiz announced its first foray into menswear in April. Meanwhile, Arcadia is debuting a Scandi-inspired men’s brand and Sainsbury’s continues to expand its offer with formal menswear.

Menswear seems to be the way forward amid declining womenswear sales. The market is expected to be the fastest growing clothing subsector to 2022, with growth of 21.2%, outperforming womenswear by 5.8 percentage points.
