Primark continues to expand in France. Strasbourg's departmental commission for retail planning (CDAC) has approved the application by the Irish retailer specialised in low-cost apparel to open a 5,700 m² store in the city, in quai Kellerman, according to the Dernières nouvelles d'Alsace, a regional newspaper, website.

The opening date is not yet known but it is not expected to be before 2018. The project marks the last stage in the renovation of the city complex home to the Printemps department store, where Primark will be located on the area of a former car-park, which was razed to the ground three years ago.

"The store's 5,700 m² surface will be split on several levels: 1,425 m² on the ground floor, 1,825 m² on the first floor, 1,225 m² on both the second and the third floors," reported the regional news website.

Primark currently operates six stores in France: three in the outskirts of Paris, and one each in Marseilles, Dijon and Lyon. Further openings are planned for the second half of the year in the South, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, Nice and Toulon. Also on the cards are stores in Toulouse, Metz and Bayonne, and Lille in 2017.

The Irish retailer closed the first half of its fiscal year on 27 February with sales for GBP2.667 billion (€3.8 billion), equivalent to a 7% rise at constant exchange rates and 5% at current exchange rates.
