The executive stepped down in early March to return to the US for personal reasons. Prior to joining Primark in May 2010, Shields worked as Chief Financial Officer for the Outlet Division of Gap.

The company, which is owned by Associated British Foods, said that a successor will be named in due course.

The departure of Shields comes as Primark prepares itself to open six more stores in the US this year, after having opened its first store in the country in Boston in September.

In the last financial year, ended in September 2015, Primark reported a £673 million profit.
