Online retailer Pink Boutique has adopted a new alternative to plastic packaging amid growing awareness of the fashion industry’s high environmental costs.

The brand has begun using mailing bags made from sugarcane produced by packaging manufacturer Duo UK. The solution is only suggested to be a more sustainable alternative, but also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease the amount of packaging waste going to landfill due to its recyclable nature.

Duo UK launched the ‘greener’ plastic mailing bag, which has the potential to save CO2 emissions equivalent to a plane flying around the world over 10,000 times, this month.

"Having seen the positive environmental impact that the 5p charge for single-use carrier bags has had on the high-street, we were keen to find a mailbag provider that would help us with our goal of using resources sustainably,” Pink Boutique financial director and co-owner Julie Blackie told Manchester Evening News.

"We are extremely proud to be working with Duo to become the first pure play fashion retailer to offer our customers a mailing bag made from a renewable source.”

Myhermes and outdoor retailer SportPursuit have also made the switch to GreenPE mailing bags.

Anthony Brimelow, commercial director at Duo UK, said: “The use of GreenPE avoids the need for plastic produced from finite fossil fuels which, as we know is a limited source. Plus, as the sugarcane grows it captures and stores CO from the atmosphere, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
