New York: Topshop takes up residence on Fifth Avenue

Announced in February, Topshop’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York opened on November 5. An important step for the British retailer, which already has four other US retail locations.

Located at the corner of 49th Street, the new US 40,000 ft² flagship is the retailer’s second largest after its store at Oxford Circus (90,000 ft²) in London. It enjoys a prime location next to Rockefeller Center and opposite the department store Saks Fifth Avenue.

The launch comes just days after the opening of a concept store in San Diego. Further plans include two US locations in Houston and Atlanta, announced provisionally for next spring. A new address is also planned for Washington DC.

Topshop’s international expansion strategy has been fueled by the sale of 25% of Topshop/Topman in 2012 to the US investment firm Leonard Green & Partners. To date, the retailer counts some 140 stores outside of the UK. Outside of the United States, the retailer also includes Hong Kong and Amsterdam as possible targets.
