The Liverpool-based fashion firm has launched a major recruitment drive to take on new full-time staff with contracts lasting for a minimum of 12 weeks, according to reports. The new employees will be offered the opportunity to extend or join the business on a permanent basis once the contract comes to an end.

“Matalan’s Retail and e-commerce business has grown and demand continues to grow. As a consequence Matalan has invested in the team to deliver this growth, supporting the current team, the business needs and future employees in the best way possible,” a spokesperson for the brand said.

Matalan’s online business performed strongly in the last quarter, climbing by almost 40% and helping total revenues increase by 5% to £265.9m.

The company sells its affordable fashion ranges for the family through 227 stores in the UK, its e-commerce platform and over 30 overseas franchise stores.

Whilst Matalan has been cashing in on Britain’s slowing economy and the squeeze on consumer spending, its CEO Jason Hargreaves warned last week that the challenging trading conditions hitting the UK retail sector are likely to continue.

In a bid to make its stores more modern and appealing in today’s shopping environment, Matalan is midway through a store refurbishment programme and is also investing in improving its website.
