British out-of-town retailer Matalan is blaming particularly challenging market conditions and ‘extremely mild weather’ for its December trading results, which revealed a fall in store revenue to £133.8 million from £142.9 million in 2014.

In the five-week period to 2 January 2016, online revenue also decreased to £2.7 million from £5.5 million in the same period last year, but full priced sales mix grew 2.6% on 2014.

The fashion and homeware brand also reported its third quarter results, which saw total revenue increase to £302.5 million, up from £298 million in the prior year’s period. Meanwhile, EBITDA declined to £32.2 million from £39.6 million year-on-year.

Jason Hargreaves, MD of Matalan said: “The results for the third quarter reflect a significant improvement on the first half of the year and were achieved in a particularly challenging market. Our supply chain responded well, demonstrating the progress made by the Liverpool warehouse in delivering better in-store availability for customers. Work is now underway to repeat this improvement online.”

Matalan, which has 217 stores across the UK, revised its full year EBITDA guidance to £54 million- £56 million from between £60 million and £65 million.
