There is, occasionally, a liberating element to losing a well-paid job, which was the true story of Sunday’s smart and skilled and sporty MSGM show by Massimo Giorgetti.

This spring, Giorgetti’s contract as designer of Pucci was not extended, following a somewhat bizarre women’s ready-to-wear show in February. Giorgetti’s decision to hire currently hot stylist Lotta Volkova – famed worked working with Demna Gvasalia of Vetements and Balenciaga – led to a collection full of exaggerated shapes, which appeared to having little to do with a resort label like Pucci. It also proved to be a bridge too far for the Florentine brand, owned by corporate luxury giant LVMH.

However, back home at his own house, Giorgetti was totally in his own groove; opening with bold stenciled graphics – with his MSGM logo in 50-centimeter high prints covering sweatpants, rapper shorts and jerkins. He showed neat khaki cotton summer suits, finished hand-painted tropical flowers; and photo-shopped the same ideas into a quintet of fantastic wafer nylon jerkins and raincoats. Talk about making a splash in a summer shower. His knits had the hot summer colors and rough finish of Mexico.

“West Coast, Flower Power a little bit of Pacific Ocean and then ending up in Mexico,” said an enthusiastic Giorgetti, looking lean and athletic – and boasting a newly frosted blond hairstyle - after he took a trot around the catwalk on via Piranesi.

Turns out giving up a nighttime job can free up the mind. As this show proved.
