The British retailer said the promotion will help it drive the pace of transformation and further strengthen the top team. Berendji will be responsible for the company’s £3bn property portfolio as it moves forward with plans to shut around 30 stores across the UK.

Marks & Spencer is looking to transform itself to meet customers’ current and future shopping needs at a time of significant change for the retail sector.

Berendji joined M&S as a graduate trainee in 1994 and has spent more than twenty years working in retail and property.

Steve Rowe commented: “Given the focus we have on improving and rationalising our UK store estate, it makes sense to bring these two teams together. Sacha has a wealth of relevant retail and property experience which, combined with his strong bias for action, will help transform our shops to meet customers’ changing shopping habits.”

The company also announced the appointment of Stuart Machin, currently group CEO of Steinhoff UK, to the new role of managing director of Food.
