GU is Uniqlo's sister brand and offers fun fashion at affordable prices. There is already a R&D centre in Tokyo, and Fast Retailing has previously been studying trends in London to develop them at the Tokyo centre.

Now, it will be able to be on top of the latest info in real time in London, looking at things like fabric and colour trends, and then develop the theme of the season and style concepts together with the Tokyo centre.

The new London R&D Centre will have around ten staff members who will begin working on the women's SS17 collection in the new centre. They include stylists who are currently based in Japan.

GU was founded in 2008 and currently has 335 stores in Japan, Shanghai and Taiwan. The company is looking to accelerate the opening of stores across the Greater China region, and to open stores in Southeast Asia.
