John Lewis denied on Wednesday morning claims that it would be curtailing its click and collect options early this year, saying that it will actually extend the ordering cut-off date.

The comments came after several newspapers reported that the British retailer would bring forward its click and collect cut-off date from Chirstmas shoppers due to unprecedented demand. The reports said both John Lewis and sister supermarket Waitrose would stop taking online click and collect orders on 22 December to avoid chaos at collection points.

However, a spokesperson confirmed that the department stores chain will be extending its service until 20:00 on 23 December, allowing customers to collect their items in all John Lewis shops in time for Christmas Day.

The cut-off date for Waitrose will remain unchanged. Customers ordering to collect at Waitrose stores will have to do so by 22 December, in line with previous years.

Shoppers are being told to expect the busiest shopping days of the year on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 and many have turned to click and collect services to buy presents and other goods.

Tesco said there are now a very limited number of click and collect slots available over the next few days, while Sainsbury’s has created more delivery slots to serve the increasing number of customers who are choosing to shop online.

Meanwhile Amazon and Argos have said online orders will be taken until the afternoon of Christmas Eve.

With December 24 falling on a Saturday this year, an estimated 900,000 shoppers are expected to hit high streets and shopping centres across the UK to do some last-minute shopping.
