Just in time for Earth Day (April 22), British shopping centre management company intu has announced the first ‘Green Gym’ on its own land.

It is part of the Green Gyms scheme, which is run by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) to help volunteers improve their health and the local environment. intu Merry Hill staff will help restore a part of Saltwells Nature Reserve in Dudley, which is owned by the centre.

This is the ninth such project to be funded by intu, but the first to be run on land owned by intu. There are currently green gyms close to intu Trafford Centre, intu Watford and intu Bromley.

Alexander Nicoll, corporate responsibility director at intu, said: “Whilst this is the first Green Gym on land owned by intu, it forms part of our long-term and ongoing commitment to restore and enhance green spaces close to intu centres across the UK."

“With two thirds of the UK’s population living within easy distance of an intu centre, we take our role in building social togetherness and tackling issues within the communities that we serve very seriously. The Green Gyms scheme is a fantastic way of bringing people together to enjoy fresh air, exercise and improvements to the environment and we’re proud to be working in partnership with TCV and local people to restore this beautiful green space for the whole community.”

intu recently also revealed that it has signed up fast fashion retailers H&M and New Look to its 400,000 sq ft extension of intu Watford.
