Has Adidas signed up Alexander Wang?

Alexander Wang is rumoured to be the latest high fashion recruit by sportswear giant Adidas

Александр Вэнг

The designer, known for his attitude-laden urban street style aesthetic, is set to have been working with the brand on a ready-to-wear collection, according to numerous reports in the fashion press. The collaboration, although unconfirmed by both parties, is expected be revealed this fall during New York Fashion Week, following Wang's runway show on September 10.

The partnership, if true, would be in keeping with Adidas's strategy to merge high fashion with its sporty DNA over recent years -- an initiative that was kickstarted back in 2004 when Stella McCartney joined forces with the brand to create what has become a fruitful high-end sportswear line. A deal with conceptual designer Rick Owens and ex-Dior designer Raf Simons followed in 2013, but the brand's most high-profile coup to date has arguably been Kanye West. The rapper, who also teamed up with the label in 2013, has brought Adidas well and truly into the fashion spotlight via his infamous and controversial Yeezy collections.

Wang, who has been concentrating on his eponymous label since parting ways with the French couture house Balenciaga last July, is no stranger to high street collaborations. In 2014 he collaborated on a capsule collection with Swedish retailer H&M that had distinctly sporty undertones, concentrating on leggings, crop tops and bodycon dresses.
