A glitch on Harrods’ website became joyous treat for savvy shoppers on Thursday afternoon when the site mistakenly listed fine leather handbags worth several hundred pounds at under £5.

The range, belonging to high-end leather accessories brand Aspinal of London, was completely sold out by Thursday evening as shoppers quickly snapped up the bargain.

A croc effect Eaton clutch was priced at £3.36, while a patent Portobello shoulder bag costed £2.51. Shoppers also bagged the brand’s Letterbox Saddle bag for just £3. According to reports, the bags’ real prices go up to £950.

A shopper told the Evening Standard:  "I couldn't believe my eyes and luck when I saw the handbags. Now I hope that Harrods honour the mistake and I get my £800 handbag for a fiver."

The famous luxury department store has recently announced plans to carry out a major £200m refurbishment – the biggest in its 183-year history- to attract more Asian customers to its Knightsbridge store. All 330 departments inside the building will be given a makeover.

As part of the revamp, the luxury retailer will expand its e-commerce options and launch Tencent’s WeChat Pay service next year.
