Founder of Vetememes creates a new parody brand called Boolenciaga

Published

The founder of the parody label Vetememes has launched another spoof of a beloved fashion house, this time called “Boolenciaga.”

Brooklyn architecture Davil Tran started Vetememes in 2016 with a simple raincoat intended to be a one-time spoof of popular French brand Vetements. The $59 coat proved unexpectedly popular and Tran kept up with the brand.

Now 23, Tran has given Balenciaga the same treatment, founding Boolenciaga. Tran said it was a natural transition after Vetements started producing less meme-worthy oversized pieces. Tran previewed the line on Instagram, revealing puffer coats and baseball caps emblazoned with the Boolenciaga logo. The products are available on Boolenciaga’s online store and are a fraction of Balenciaga items, with the caps retailing for $65.

Balenciaga is also designed by Vetements founder Demna Gvasalia. Following the popularity of the Vetememes line, Gvasalia told the New York Times that Vetements would not be filing any lawsuits against the spoof brand, and wished Tran well on his project.

Tran has said he is slightly more worried about potential legal repercussions from Balenciaga. The fashion brand has repeatedly sued Steve Madden for allegedly copying its designs. Balenciaga is headquartered in Paris and owned by Kering, while Vetements remains an independent brand and recently moved its production from Paris to Zurich.
