Fordham University announces first fashion law degree program

Fordham Law School, the Fashion Law Institute, and the CFDA announced Monday the launch of world’s first fashion law degree program at the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham Law School.

Beginning this fall semester, attorneys and non-lawyers will be able to pursue a Master of Laws, or L.L.M., in Fashion Law that will offer courses including fashion financing, fashion modeling law, fashion licensing, and sustainability, all taught by fashion industry insiders. It will be open to future lawyers as well as those simply interested.

Diane von Furstenberg (center) and CFDA's Steven Kolb (standing) joined Fordham University Provost Stephen Freedman and Fashion Law Institute Director Susan Scafidi on June 22 to launch two new master’s degrees in fashion law..

The new program will allow lawyers, designers, executives, and other fashion industry professionals to learn how law affects the fashion industry and business.
"Ignorance of the law is no defense," Professor Susan Scafidi says, "but for too long law schools have left everyone but lawyers ignorant of all but the most basic legal rules."

By opening the doors of law school to anyone in fashion, the Fashion Law Institute aims not only to prepare graduates to launch their own lines or to pursue career opportunities in such areas as licensing, corporate compliance, human resources, supply chain management, marketing, and international trade, but also to provide a model for the future of legal education itself.

"The Fashion Law Institute at Fordham Law has provided our students with significant experiences in a dynamic, growing field of law," says Dean Michael M. Martin. "We’re grateful for Professor Susan Scafidi’s leadership and excited about the opportunities these two new master’s degrees will offer to future students."

The Fashion Law Institute was established in 2010 with the support of the CFDA. Professor Scafidi proposed the first course in "Fashion Law" in 2006, and wrote why the course was necessary in 2008, which ultimately led to its creation.

Since then, other schools have adopted the Fashion Law course, including the University of Milan, the University of Insurbria, Instituto Brasileiro de Negócios e Direito da Moda, the University at Buffalo Law School, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, New York Law School, New York University, the Fashion Law Project at Loyola Law School, the Moda Hukuku Enstitusu in Turkey, and Howard University, which has an annual Fashion Law Week.

Applications for the L.L.M. and M.S.L. programs are now open and are available to part-time and full-time students.
