American sportswear and footwear retailer Footlocker has shrugged off concerns about the British retail industry as it unveiled plans to open one of its largest global stores at Liverpool One shopping centre this year.

At 21,000 sq ft, the store will be one of the brand’s largest in a global portfolio of 2,500 stores. The unit will open on the centre’s South John Street, becoming the latest in a series of sportswear and footwear brands to select Liverpool One following JD and Superdry’s arrival at the end of 2017.

Footasylum-owned footwear retailer Seven Liverpool has also recently celebrated its first birthday on Liverpool One’s Paradise Street.

HMV will relocate to a new 13,000 sq ft store on South John Street to facilitate Footlocker’s arrival, announced Grosvenor Europe, the manager of Liverpool One, on Monday.

Alison Clegg, Director, Asset Management at Grosvenor Europe, said: “Securing Footlocker is a reflection of our strategy of providing visitors with a highly compelling and relevant offer that is unavailable elsewhere.  Along with the new HMV, the new stores will provide on-trend, exciting offers that further strengthen Liverpool ONE’s great mix of brands.”

Adidas, Jack Wolfskin, Nike, Sports Direct, The North Face and Realbuzz have also a presence at the shopping and leisure complex. Liverpool One had a good 2017, with sales up 3% compared to 2016 and footfall exceeding 29 million for the first time.
