Fenwick to close Windsor store after 37 years

British upmarket department store Fenwick is closing its store in Windsor after 37 years, but will open a nearby location in Bracknell in the autumn.

Mark Fenwick, group chairman, dubbed Windsor as a “perfect Fenwick town”, but despite its charm, the group’s King Edward Court store fell into a loss in recent periods and its lease expired.

"The decision to close has been particularly difficult for the company, the family and me personally, as we have been committed to serving the people of Windsor for over 30 years,” said the chairman.

"We have always seen Windsor as a perfect Fenwick town, where our particularly fashion-orientated, specialist store offer would thrive. Unfortunately we were unable to find a suitable alternative location.”

Shop staff have been told they can transfer to the group’s new store in Bracknell. Scheduled to open at The Lexicon later in the year, the new 80,000 sq ft shop will feature modern design and green credentials.

Fenwick will be joined by international designers Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Max Mara, Armani, Hugo Boss, Gant, Ralph Lauren and Charlotte Tilbury at the new shopping and leisure destination.

The announcement follows the closure of a long-established Fenwick store in Leicester earlier this year. The British department store chain has currently 10 stores in the UK including a flagship on New Bond Street, London.

Fenwick warned of an “extremely challenging” environment last year, struggling due to weakening footfall, changes in consumer behaviours and the lack of an e-commerce presence. The retailer is expected to launch a transactional site this year.
