Dover Street New York announces New Beginning designers

Published
Jan 31, 2017

Dover Street Market is re-envisioning its New York outpost, this time to show off the products of nine new designers, part of its bi-annual New Beginning selection. Each of the new designers has been hand-picked by Rei Kawakubo, her personal forecast of the names to be watched in the fashion industry.

This year’s chosen designers are Blue Roses by Edward Meadham, Cottweiler, Delada, Egg, Elena Dawson, Hereu, Martiniano, Rue de Verneuil, and Teija.

Cottweiler, designed by Matthew Dainty and Benn Cottrell, is a menswear brand that shows seasonally at LFW: M. The duo has already racked up the industry accolades, being chosen by Pitti Uomo for a collaboration with Reebok and winning the International Woolmark prize.

Egg is a minimalistic womenswear label that has been a long-time collaborator with Dover Street Market. Teija, designed by Teija Eilola, is a recent Royal College of Art grad whose offerings were on display in Barneys windows earlier in January. Argentinian leather brand Martiniano has quickly become a street-style favorite for creating sock-like leather heels and flats.

Twice a year, Dover Street Market opens up its doors to a curated group of new designers to show under the title “New Beginning”. Past brands that have been showcased at New Beginning include Noir Kei Ninomiya, OAMC, Andrea Jiaipei Lei, Craig Green, and Gosha Rubchinskiy. DSM CEO Adrian Joffe told the press in 2015 that the shut-down of the store to revamp for ‘New Beginning’ cost Dover Street Market $120,000 in missed sales.
