Debenhams has opened a brand new 93,000 sq ft anchor store at Mander Centre in Wolverhampton, creating more than 150 new jobs.

The much-anticipated store comes with experiential features that encourage customers to stay longer, such as large and group-sized changing rooms, where refreshments are served to parties of people, and a Loaf & Bloom restaurant.

This is only the second Debenhams store to feature the new design, introduced by CEO Sergio Bucher as part of his new vision for the department store.

It is estimated that more than 2,000 people visited the store on the opening day. The shop is expected to provide a major boost to shopping in Mander Centre and Wolverhampton.

Rob Hadfield, Director of Group Property at Debenhams, commented: “Wolverhampton is one of the largest markets which does not currently have a Debenhams store. We are delighted to be finally opening in the city.

“This will be the second store to follow a new layout and customer journey following on from our Debenhams Redesigned strategy. Customers will find the store to be inviting and friendly along with new elements such as our new Loaf & Bloom restaurant offer.”

The Debenhams opening is part of a £35 million redevelopment of the Mander Centre. The reconfiguration has created 10 new units with recent additions including  Footasylum, The Entertainer, JD Sports and a 30,000 sq ft H&M which includes a Homeware section – the first of its kind the Midlands.

City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Economy, Councillor John Reynolds, said:
“The new-look Mander Centre will be a huge boost to the city’s retail offer and is creating jobs for the people of Wolverhampton. It is an exciting time ahead in terms of regeneration, with £1 billion of investment in city centre projects – part of £3 billion of investment either on site or in the pipeline in Wolverhampton as a whole.”
