Columbia Sportswear has tapped former Gap Inc. executive Michael Richardson as its new vice president of global merchandising for its Columbia brand.

Michael Richardson - Columbia Sportswear Company

In his new role, Richardson will be responsible for executing Columbia's strategy for its global apparel product assortment.

Richardson brings thirty years of retail experience to Columbia. Most recently he was Gap Inc.'s VP of franchise product, a role where he managed product teams in merchandising, planning and buying for the Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy brands in 40 countries.

Indeed, aside from a short break to be an independent retail consultant, Richardson spent the better part of the past twenty years working for Gap Inc. His background includes gourmet food products as well as sporting goods, including both hard and soft lines. Richardson attended California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.

“Michael’s strong background with one of the world’s top vertical retailers will prove invaluable as Columbia transforms into a multichannel consumer brand with a strong foundation leading the outdoor industry around the world,” said Joe Boyle, executive vice president and Columbia Brand president, in a statement.

Columbia Sportswear's brands Columbia, Mountain Hardware, Sorel and Prana are currently sold in 90 countries.

Richardson's role as VP of Global Merchandising is effective immediately. He reports to Boyle.
