Cath Kidston will be reviewing the locations of its UK stores as leases come up for renewal, to ensure its stores are located in high footfall areas.

The fashion and homeware chain, which has 65 stores across the UK, said individual branches will be reviewed as they reach their renewal date, with the process working on a case by case basis.

A store in Westfield Stratford closed recently, but another one will open in Westfield White City’s new extension soon. Last year, a store in Edinburgh’s George Street was also moved to a more prime location on Princes Street.

“Like all smart retailers, we are always reviewing our UK store network to ensure our shops are in the best locations,” a spokesperson for the brand said.

“The UK remains our largest market both in terms of sales and store numbers. We are not looking to radically increase or decrease the number of stores we have in the UK, however, we will continue to close and open new stores to ensure we have the best estate possible to meet our customers’ needs and shopping patterns.”

The news comes as a number of retailers struggle to cope with the many challenges facing UK retail sector, with high-profile chains including House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and New Look launching insolvency procedures or store portfolio reviews to survive.

A shift towards online shopping, declining consumer spending and higher overhead costs are some of the factors hitting UK retailers.
