The footwear business, created for women who suffer from bunions, will receive part of the £500k investment fund alongside Kokoon Technology and K Tech Manufacturing.

The funding will be used to produce and implement a strategic marketing campaign aimed at tripling the brand’s revenue over the next 12 months and reaching £1m in sales within three years. There are also plans to expand its overseas partnerships and source new and innovative materials.

More than 100 companies applied to receive cash and mentoring from the British Design Fund. Launched at the end of 2017, the fund was created by former Design Council CEO John Mathers and Damon Bonser.

140 investors contributed to the first wave of funding. A second fund is expected to launch later this year, which will be used to support between 10 and 15 early stage product businesses.

Calla Shoes addresses a gap in the market with shoes that support and disguises bunions by featuring a wider design with additional volume in the toe box. It uses leather and stretch materials to provide more flexibility than other shoes.
