It was a bumper week online for John Lewis in the seven days to July 22 but its physical stores also saw strong sales. The result? An 8.9% turnover increase to £79.8 million and online traffic that made it “one of its biggest weeks of the year.”

Fashion sales for the week were strong, up 15.5% on the same week last year, and womenswear in particular enjoyed a hugely successful several days.

Its astonishing 34.5% sales increase was boosted by the retailer’s new own-label denim lifestyle brand And/Or, which John Lewis described as a “stand out” performer during the week.

Elsewhere, beauty, wellbeing and leisure also proved to be buoyant as they have been all year with sales up 13.4%, driven by strong sales at the firm’s beauty counters.

Home sales were up 11%, which was good news given that this directory has struggled to show good growth for much of the year. Textiles and home accessories enjoyed their strongest week, seeing sales rise by 16.3%. Furniture and flooring also saw a good week of sales growth, up 8.4%.

Electricals and home technology sales were ahead too, but only by  2.1%. Tablets and computers enjoyed a particularly strong few days, up 23%, driven by sales of the MacBook Air and 10 inch iPads. Sales within vision also saw double-digit growth, driven by the launch of the new Samsung chrome TV.
