A new survey by retail research agency Conlumino of 2,000 UK shoppers shows that 9% of them, nearly one in ten, are worried they will spend more than they can afford on Black Friday this year.

For those who shop at Asda, the figure increases to 14.6%, though they needn't worry about overspending in Asda - the company has confirmed it is stepping back from the Black Friday frenzy this year. The number of Morrisons shoppers worried about overspending is 5.4%, for Tesco it's 7.6% and for Sainsbury's 8.8%.

Younger shoppers worry the most, with 19.4% of 18-34 consumers
fearing they will spend more than they can afford on Black Friday this year. Surprisingly, 8.6% of UK consumers will do all their Christmas shopping on Black Friday. For those aged 18-34, it's even higher, rising to 18%, nearly a fifth.

12.3% of those surveyed will shop Black Friday whilst at work, and 8.1% will take the day off to shop.

Greg Bromley, Retail Analyst at Conlumino, remarks: “The consumer appetite for Black Friday bargains is evident ahead of the big day at the end of November. The fact that younger consumers are much more engaged with the occasion suggests that retailers should target these consumers with their promotional activity.”
