Bad weather, Brexit leads to decline in UK footfall

Last week was a sad one for the UK high street as British shoppers stayed in. Footfall was down 4.6% year-on-year, according to retail performance insights provider Springboard.

The Springboard Index is a weighted average of the High Street, Shopping Centres and Retail Parks. Springboard found that the decline was predominantly post referendum – Thursday to Saturday, which fell 6.4% in comparison to 2.7% for the beginning of the week. This could point to shoppers feeling negative after the vote to Leave the European Union; but Springboard points out that this also coincides with the heaviest periods of rain for the week.

The results are in sharp contrasts to the monthly figures for May, which showed that for only the third time in the last two years, UK footfall increased in May, up 0.3%.

On Friday, after the referendum results, shares in British retailers were "battered," with some of the country's best-known retailers, including Marks & Spencer, Next, Debenhams and Sports Direct, enduring record intra-day falls as the cost of Britain's retreat from Europe was priced in.
