The British Retail Council has launched a UK student challenge in an effort to encourage future generations to engage with and address the cyber security risks facing the retail industry.

The challenge is open to students from UK higher education establishments and invites participants to offer new ideas on how government, law enforcement and industry should work together to tackle cyber security threats.

“An estimated 53 per cent of reported fraud in the retail industry is cyber-enabled, which represents a total direct cost of around £100 million to UK businesses,” said Hugo Rosemont, crime and security policy adviser at the BRC.

“The retail industry has long been investing in its cyber resilience in this context, however this is a rapidly evolving field and we are inviting the next generation to come forward with suggestions of new ideas and innovation that can help us keep on top of the challenges facing businesses.”

Entries will be judged by a panel of leading cyber security scholars from Imperial College, London, UCL, and King’s College, London. Successful candidates will be awarded prizes totalling £800.

The initiative forms part of a wider effort from the BRC to step up the fight against evolving risks associated with operating online. According to the organisation, as the online market has grown, the retail industry has seen the rise of ever more elaborate forms of cyber-related crimes such as ‘doxing’, ‘whaling’ and ‘spoofing’ against both retail businesses and online shoppers.

To help retailers protect themselves, the BRC has also launched a cyber security ‘toolkit’ with recommendations aimed at helping businesses prevent and manage cyber security threats.
