Senior representatives from Asos, Missguided, Boohoo, New Look, French Connection, Lipsy, Perry Ellis, Jack Wills, as well as Selfridges, Burberry and Debenhams are meeting to talk about modern slavery in the apparel sector in an event hosted by Asos at the House of Lords on Tuesday.

The meeting is co-hosted with Baroness Lola Young, who co-chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ethics and Sustainability in Fashion.

In addition to identifying modern slavery risks in key sourcing regions, the two and half hour meeting will seek a commitment from attendees to increase transparency and tackle the issue.

Nick Beighton, CEO of Asos, said: “A lack of transparency in the supply chain can lead to issues like poor working conditions business and genuine business risk. It’s only by working together, sharing experiences and committing to common goals that we can truly tackle modern slavery.”

The initiative is part of a wider effort by Asos to make the business more ethically responsible. In February, the online fashion company held an event with the British High Commission in Mauritius to discuss labour migration and develop a common framework for improving worker protection.

Baroness Young commented: “Exploitative, forced and child labour is bigger than any single company so it’s hugely encouraging to see competitive businesses recognising the role they can play in addressing the labour abuses that are sadly still so prevalent in fashion manufacturing around the world.”

This week, Asos will also release its second Modern Slavery Statement in line with UK legislation.
