Apple Watches will only be sold online until at least June

The Apple Watch really knows how to make its buyers wait. Even though pre-orders of the smartwatch started on 10 April and the official date it goes sale and will be deliverable is still April 24h, there will be no need yet to camp out in front one of Apple Stores next week. The Apple Watch will only be available online for now, and until at least June.

This is what Angela Ahrendts, vice president of Apple retail, told her teams via a memo. "Due to the high interest in the world, we are only taking orders online for now," she said, stating that she will have more information in the coming weeks, "but we are expecting this to be the situation throughout all of May."

Angela Ahrendts explains this delay notably by the fact that "it is an entirely new product category for us." She also points out that the sales approach for the Apple Watch is also entirely new: "That's why, for the first time, we're allowing our new product to be tried out in stores before even starting their delivery."

Angela Ahrendts insists on the fact that ordering online - with or without the assistance of an Apple employee - allows customers to better personalise their Apple Watch. She did state, however, that future Apple products will not all be launched in this manner.
