Amazon will turn Black Friday into Black Fortnight in UK

Amazon will launch its Black Friday offers next week (November 14) with the promotion running until November 25 as it seeks to get a holiday season lead on its online rivals.

Amazon is preparing for a shopping frenzy in the next two weeks

The e-commerce giant said that in the 12 days leading up to Black Friday it will double the number of deals it offers compared to last year. In 2015, its Black Friday-linked promotion ran for one week only.

Amazon has more than doubled its workforce for November and December with an extra 20,000 temporary workers having been taken on.

It also said that this year over 1,000 small businesses that sell through the website’s Marketplace operation will participate in the event.

It will launch new limited-time 'lightning deals' regularly during the 12-day promotion and said Amazon Prime members will have an exclusive 30-minute early access period for these.

The e-tailer, which is now a major force in fashion retail in Britain, is capitalising on a trend that has seen Black Friday becoming a more online-focused shopping event since last year.

Black Friday was introduced to the UK from the US by Amazon earlier this decade and in its original American form, decades ago, it was the post-Thanksgiving kick-off for the Holiday shopping season in physical stores.

It was very much a physical store event in Britain at first. But, in 2015 the action largely migrated online with mall and high street stores taken by surprise as they failed to generate the heavy footfall they had seen in 2014.
