According to data released by Oppenheimer, in the past two years, Amazon has tripled the number of unique visitors to its mobile site in the United States alone.

Its competitors are Target, Walmart and eBay. In contrast to Amazon's growth, they showed virtually no increase in mobile traffic for the same time period. EBay has even seen a decline.

To put it in to context, Oppenheimer explained Amazon's success by comparing it to its competitors.

The Oppenheimer study said, "At the end of 2014, Amazon had roughly the same number of mobile unique visitors as Walmart and eBay, in the US. As of December 2016, Amazon has more unique visitors than the apps of those two companies’ combined."

With mobile commerce being the future of retail, Amazon is looking poised for long term growth. Business Insider forecasts that by 2020, mobile sales will make up 45% of the total US ecomm market, or $284 billion, which is a lot of growth from the 11% or $33 billion they made up in 2014.

Amazon is keeping a keen eye on the shift to mobile commerce. Its mobile app is increasing in penetration with 50% of US shoppers using it. As Oppenheimer noted, "Amazon is well positioned to benefit from the shift to mobile shopping."
