Research by Barclaycard also found that 17.1 million British shoppers said they planned to spend more than usual online over the past Bank Holiday weekend. This means post room workers can expect deliveries of nearly double the usual 3 million parcels and packages they receive a day.

A fifth of respondents, 21%, said their online retail habits have doubled or tripled in the last three years, and nearly one in ten now get a daily delivery sent to their work address (8%). Books are the number one purchase people have sent to their work address, and more men (33%) use their professional address as a way of hiding purchases from a partner.

20% of men said they get make-up delivered to work (20%). The research also showed that people in Nottingham shop online the most, with 29% getting daily deliveries sent to work.

Marc Pettican, Managing Director at Barclaycard, said:

“We all love the speed and ease of shopping online and this is especially true over the Bank Holiday weekend when we’ve got an extra day to shop. There’s no denying how handy it is to get our deliveries sent to the work place, so much so that people working in post rooms will likely be feeling quite rushed off their feet, as we anticipate a busy week ahead. With online shopping continuing to increase in popularity, this post room boom looks here to stay.”

British shoppers now spend more than £100bn online every year, but 16% of respondents saying they no longer have a private letter box. 51% of respondents say they can’t take the time off work to go to a collection office if they miss a delivery.
